World number 50 Zhizhen Zhang came back from a set down to beat in-form Aleksandar Kovacevic to get a strong foothold in at Indian Wells and he looks set to benefit from a kind draw here against lucky loser Luca Nardi. World number 123 Nardi lost to David Goffin in three sets on Wednesday but he enjoyed a fortunate leg-up to the second round at Tomas Martin Etcheverry’s expense and that second wind is always a tough force to break for any opponent. 27-year-old Zhang had lost each of his last two matches in three sets, albeit to tough foes in Gael Monfils and Andrey Rublev, to suggest sets can go both ways here but it would be a surprise to see the Chinese shocked after producing his best tennis at Masters events last season. Back Zhang to win outright for caution’s sake.
