THE PREDICTION
World number 12 Taylor Fritz did well to avoid an upset in his opening match with in-form Alejandro Tabilo, coming through a first-set tiebreak before rolling the second. The 26-year-old won his most prestigious of eight ATP titles here at Indian Wells in 2022, beating Rafael Nadal in the final, but he has struggled to reach those heights practically since a quarter-final exit to the Spaniard at Wimbledon later that summer. Fritz successfully defended his Delray Beach Open title last month but a shock first round exit to Matteo Arnaldi in Acapulco two weeks ago attests to his current fragility on tour and this looks another really tough fixture against in-form Sebastian Baez, who beat the aforementioned Tabilo to the Chile Open title last month.
In fact, 23-year-old Baez won back-to-back titles in Rio and Santiago to bring his career total up to six and he broke inside the top 20 for the first time for his efforts. A straight-sets victory over Fabio Fognini on Saturday sees the intense Argentine bring a 10-match winning streak into this potential thriller with Fritz but the American has so far coasted through their previous meetings, including at this stage last season here in the desert, to remain the slight favourite. Three sets seem likelier than two this time so back Fritz to edge through outright with the Indian Wells crowd firmly behind him.
TIP: TAYLOR FRITZ TO WIN
