THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Sloane Stephens has looked in excellent shape so far at Indian Wells, blasting past in-form Sorana Cirstea on Saturday to claim back-to-back wins for only the second time this season, and she will be backed to the hilt by the home crowd here at Indian Wells. The 30-year-old burned brightly, if too briefly, between 2015 and 2018 to claim prestigious titles in Washington, Charleston and Acapulco alongside her Grand Slam title at the US Open (2017) and only Masters title to date from Miami a year later. World number 12 Daria Kasatkina beat Oceane Dodin in straight sets to avoid a potential upset well but she has struggled to cope with Stephens’ best in recent years, trailing the American 1-4 in their head-to-head after a three-set exit to the American at the Australian Open in January. Each of their last two meetings have seen three sets, and three of their five overall, but Kasatkina should not be ruled out entirely after a strong start to 2024. Back Stephens to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
