THE PREDICTION
World number 49 Yue Yuan made it six wins on the spin with victory over Varvara Gracheva in straight sets on Thursday, backing-up her excellent run to a maiden WTA title at the Austin Open last weekend. This looks too steep of a challenge for the 25-year-old against her compatriot Chinese number one Qinwen Zheng, but three sets is not out of the question as Zheng continues to stabilise following her remarkable season so far. 21-year-old Zheng set a career-high of seventh after finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka at the Australian Open in January but a straight-sets defeat to Iga Swiatek in Dubai last time out proved there is still a significant gulf to the top of the sport. Zheng should be winning this first encounter with Yuan in straight sets but take the younger Chinese to win outright for caution’s sake.
