THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Naomi Osaka conceded just four games to veteran Sara Erani in the first round to get a good foothold in at Indian Wells. The 26-year-old won her first of seven career WTA titles here back in 2018 before claiming the first of her four Grand Slam titles at the US Open later that year but she returns to the desert ranked just inside the top 300 after taking a break from the sport in 2022.
A remarkable run to the quarter-finals of the Qatar Masters in only her fourth tournament back from becoming a mother for the first time suggests she can be a serious factor here this fortnight but world number 15 Liudmila Samsonova is at her best in these conditions too to offer a very tough challenge. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Abu Dhabi Open this time last month, before finally losing to Elena Rybakina at the fifth attempt, but she has struggled a little since to suggest this match could go either way. Osaka will use every ounce of the euphoria offered her by an adoring crowd here but backing the Japanese to earn at least a set is the sensible way to avoid a result between two very capable victors.
TIP: NAOMI OSAKA TO WIN A SET
