THE PREDICTION

World number 33 Leylah Fernandez beat Bernarda Pera in straight sets on Monday to maintain her excellent level from last week’s run to the quarter-finals at the Qatar Masters, where she beat three tough foes in Paula Badosa, Liudmila Samsonova and Australian Open runner-up Qinwen Zheng. The 21-year-old ended last season in excellent form to win her third WTA title at the Hong Kong Open but perhaps her crowning glory to date, 2021 US Open campaign aside, was almost single-handedly dragging Canada to their first ever BJK Cup in November. World number 26 Jasmine Paolini was part of a handy Italian side at the BJK Cup in Seville but she lost to Fernandez there to trail the Canadian 0-3 in their head-to-head record. 28-year-old Paolini came back from a set down to stun an out-of-sorts Beatriz Haddad-Maia on Sunday but she may be out-grafted by a similarly gutsy opponent in Fernandez. Back the Canadian to win.

TIP: LEYLAH FERNANDEZ TO WIN
