THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Katie Boulter will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 44th after an excellent straight-sets opener over Lesia Tsurenko on Monday. The Brit won her maiden WTA title at the Nottingham Open last summer but she has started 2024 in arguably the form of her career so far to suggest this will be her best season yet. World number 13 Beatriz Haddad-Maia should prove too tough a test in their first encounter but there is certainly a chance at the upset given the Brazilian brings a three-match losing streak into San Diego. Haddad-Maia, also 27, is a notorious grafter on court whose matches regularly sail over the three-hour mark and that looked to take its toll in Abu Dhabi, where she reached the semi-finals before fatigue saw her edge out by Daria Kasatkina. Back the Brazilian to win outright here, refreshed and recharged, but the suitably cautious pick for an accumulator would be at least a set to leave the result up to chance.
TIP: BEATRIZ HADDAD-MAIA TO WIN
