THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Jelena Ostapenko moved back inside the top 10 this week, at world number nine, despite snapping her remarkable streak of reaching at least the final (in either singles or doubles) at tournaments this year. However, in doing so the Latvian maintained her other, much more bespoke stat, by losing to Victoria Azarenka in the round of 16 last week in Doha – handing her a 14-3 record for the season so far with each of those three losses coming against Azarenka. It remains to be seen how Ostapenko reacts to her first relatively poor campaign of the year but two titles so far this season say she can bounce back against a tough customer in world number 64 Xiyu Wang, who qualified well this weekend to make the main draw. 22-year-old Wang took Ostapenko to three sets before defeat at the Miami Open back in 2021 but at this moment in time the Chinese is not at her best whilst Ostapenko is, or has been as recently as this month, firing on all cylinders. Back the Latvian to win outright for caution’s sake.
TIP: JELENA OSTAPENKO TO WIN
