THE PREDICTION
World number four Daniil Medvedev beat Alexander Shevchenko in straight sets in his first match back from an extended break since a heart-breaking defeat to Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open final. The 28-year-old spent longer on court than any finalist before him in Melbourne with four of his seven matches going the distance over a gruelling two weeks and it was clear after Sinner took the crucial third set, from two down, that he had finally run out of steam. Three lost Australian Open finals has to hurt the Russian but he should also be buoyed by his efforts, coming back from two sets down himself to oust rival Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals, and he found some scintillating form this time last season including with victory here at the Dubai Tennis Championships. The defending champion looks the firm favourite to beat an out-of-sorts Lorenzo Sonego on Wednesday but the Italian often finds his best against the best. A three-set victory over Sumit Nagal on Tuesday is nowhere near Sonego’s best standard but he will likely improve here, making straight sets in favour of Medvedev a reasonable risk.
TIP: DANIIL MEDVEDEV TO WIN 2-0
