Newcastle preview: Mixed bag

Newcastle were undone by a Nico O'Reilly brace last week as they lost 2-1 away to Man City, and they head into the weekend's fixtures in the bottom half of the table.

The Magpies progressed to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League midweek though, beating Qarabag 3-2 to complete a 9-3 aggregate success.

Everton preview: Back-to-back defeats

Everton held out for long periods against Man Utd last week but ultimately fell to a second straight Premier League defeat, with the Toffees one point above Newcastle heading into this fixture.

The Toffees' away form in the Premier League has been excellent though; they are unbeaten in five on their travels, picking up 11 points from the 15 available in that stretch.

Newcastle team news: Ramsey touch and go

A minor hamstring issue kept Jacob Ramsey out of the midweek European fixture, but Eddie Howe is hopeful that the midfielder could return to the fold on Saturday.

Lewis Miley is still a couple of weeks away from action due to a troublesome leg issue, with Howe stating that they are playing it cautiously with the youngster's recovery.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall; Ramsey, Tonali, Willock; Murphy, Wissa, Gordon

Unavailable: Schar (Injured), Krafth (Injured), Livramento (Injured), Miley (Injured), Guimaraes (Injured)

Questionable: Ramsey (Injured)

Everton team news: O'Brien returns

Charly Alcaraz is expected to be out for a up to a month after sustaining an injury in training, and he joins long-term absentee Jack Grealish on the sidelines.

Jake O'Brien has completed his one-match suspension and could come straight back in at right-back, while Jarrad Branthwaite and Vitalii Mykolenko are competing for the left-back berth.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; O'Brien, Tarkowski, Keane, Branthwaite; Garner, Gueye; Ndiaye, Dewsbury-Hall, Armstrong; Barry

Unavailable: Grealish (Injured), Alcaraz (Injured)

Questionable: Travers (Injured)

Newcastle vs Everton prediction

Despite going well in Europe, Newcastle are not where they need to be in the Premier League and Eddie Howe will now be keen to see them push towards the top half of the table.

Usually so strong in front of their fervent home support, the Magpies have surprisingly lost their last two Premier League games at St James' Park, and they now face an Everton outfit who have proven effective on their travels in recent times.

With these factors in mind, a draw would not be a surprise in this one.

Newcastle vs Everton tip: Draw
