Newcastle United are sensing a trophy in one cup competition this season as they begin another by welcoming League Two side Bromley to St James’ Park this weekend.

Newcastle Preview: Joy for Geordies

Eddie Howe is desperate to be the man to break Newcastle United’s trophy duck, which is well over half a century now, and the Magpies have a real chance in the EFL Cup as they come into this one on the back of a 2-0 defeat of Arsenal in the first-leg of their semi-final.

They will welcome the Gunners to the north east next month with a great chance of a second EFL Cup final in three seasons. That win, thanks to goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, means they have now enjoyed seven successive victories across all competitions.

Bromley Preview: Ravens flying high

Bromley, following their first ever promotion to the EFL last season, have enjoyed an impressive campaign in the fourth-tier last season as they begin the weekend sitting in mid-table but just six points outside of the top six and the playoff places with a game-in-hand.

The visitors come into this one on the back of a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road in their most recent outing last weekend just a few days after an impressive 2-0 win at Gillingham and that loss at Crewe ended a ten-match unbeaten run of form.

Newcastle Team News: Rest and rotation

In the second-half of that win against Arsenal, all three of Sven Botman, Joe Willock and Alexander Isak had to be taken off due to slight knocks and are unlikely to feature this weekend, whilst Fabian Schar and Bruno Guimaraes have returned from their respective suspensions.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Vlachodimos; Trippier, Schar, Kelly, Targett; Guimaraes, Longstaff, Miley; Murphy, Osula, Barnes

Unavailable: Pope (Injured), Lascelles (Injured), Krafth (Injured), Wilson (Injured)

Questionable: Botman (Injured), Willock (Injured), Isak (Injured)

Bromley Team News: The Cheek of it

33-year-old 6 ft 1 in striker non-league journeyman Michael Cheek has adapted well to his first season in the EFL, scoring 12 goals for Bromley so far this season. He will be key for a side that have no reported injury concerns ahead of the trip. Kamarl Grant is out suspended, though.

Predicted XI (3-4-1-2): Smith; Passley, Sowumni, Reynolds; Imray, Arthurs, Thompson, Odutayo; Whitely; Cheek, Dennis

Unavailable: Grant (Suspended)

Questionable:

Newcastle vs Bromley Prediction

Newcastle United will be expected to put their foot down once again and keep up the good mood on Tyneside at the moment because the only thing better than one good cup run is two good cup runs. Bromley will be fierce and direct as they make the trip to the north and they will fancy their chances against a rotated Newcastle side but, even with likely heavy rotation, the hosts are expected to win this one quite comfortably.

Newcastle vs Bromley Tip: Newcastle to win -1 handicap
