Inter Milan Preview: From potential treble winners to potentially trophyless

Simone Inzagh’s Internazionale have endured a difficult run of form of late that has seen their hopes of the treble fade with Coppa Italia semi-final elimination at the hands of AC Milan and a couple of defeats in Serie A meaning they slide behind Napoli in the Scudetto title race.

The Nerazzurri did manage to edge past Hellas Verona by a goal to nil at San Siro the other day courtesy of a ninth minute penalty scored by Albania international Kristjan Asllani. That was just their third victory in their last ten matches across all competitions.

Barcelona Preview: Treble remains on the cards for the Blaugrana

In contrast Inter, Barcelona remain firmly in contention for the treble this season, despite the fact that their performances of late have also dipped and been a little more unconvincing than they had been previously this season with former Germany boss Hansi Flick at the helm.

One of those unconvincing performances happened at the weekend as they were forced to come from behind to defeat a historically poor Real Valladolid side at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla with second-half goals from Raphinha and Fermin Lopez giving Barca a 2-1 win.

Inter Milan Team News: No Martinez

At half-time of the first-leg last week, Argentina international striker and key man Lautaro Martinez was forced off through injury and he is now a major doubt for this one, too, as Iran international striker Mehdi Taremi is expected to start. France international defender Benjamin Pavard is also a doubt due to an ankle issue for this week.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Sommer; Bisseck, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Taremi

Unavailable:

Questionable: Pavard (Injured), Martinez (Injured)

Barcelona Team News: Lewa racing to get fit

Having been missing for the last few weeks, Robert Lewandowski is once again expected to be on the bench at the very most this week due to a hamstring injury. Arguably a bigger issue for the Catalans is at full-back with Alex Balde still missing and now Jules Kounde being unavailable due to his own hamstring injury.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Szczesny; Araujo, Cubarsi, Martinez, Martin; Pedri, De Jong; Yamal, Olmo, Raphinha; Torres

Unavailable: Kounde (Injured), Balde (Injured), Bernal (Injured), Casado (Injured), Torre (Injured)

Questionable: Gavi (Injured), Lewandowski (Injured)

Inter Milan vs Barcelona Prediction

Inter took the game to Barca last week and opened the scoring within the first 33 seconds thanks to a strike from Marcus Thuram. The way in which Denzel Dumfries in particular exploited the high Barca line was very impressive but Barca did begin to get to grips and squeeze them a lot better in the second-half. Barca will play the exact same way at San Siro and it should once again be a thriller for the neutral whereby the general outcome of the match is genuinely too tough to call.

Inter Milan vs Barcelona Tip: Both teams to score
