Tottenham preview: Can Spurs finally kick into gear?

It was a sign of how bad Tottenham's start to the season has been that a 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Man Utd was treated like a win last weekend, but in fairness to Roberto De Zerbi's side, they did fight back well with ten men.

The mood will quickly be dampened should they don't defeat promoted side Coventry though, and De Zerbi will surely face some difficult questions should a victory fail to materialise.

Coventry preview: Finding their groove in the top flight

After four defeats to begin their first season back in the Premier League, Coventry have now recorded back-to-back victories, following a narrow win at Nottingham Forest with an excellent 4-1 success against Newcastle on Monday.

You have to go back to October 2000 to find the last time that Coventry defeated Tottenham, with John Aloisi and John Eustace scoring in a 2-1 victory for the Sky Blues.

Tottenham team news: Bentancur suspended

Tottenham's press conference will not take place until Sunday due to the fact the squad are returning from a warm-weather training camp in Marbella, so it remains to be seen whether Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski are fit enough to make the squad on Monday.

What we do know is that Rodrigo Bentancur will miss out through suspension following his dismissal against Man Utd.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Kinsky; Gray, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bergvall, Tonali; Savinho, Gallagher, Kudus; Solanke

Unavailable: Bentancur (Suspended), Simons (Injured), Mudryk (Injured), Odobert (Injured), Richarlison (Out of favour)

Questionable: Porro (Injured), Kulusevski (Fitness)

Coventry team news: Awoniyi back from ban

Taiwo Awoniyi has completed his suspension and could go straight back into the starting line-up, although 19-year-old Guinean striker Sidiki Cherif - who scored his first Premier League goal last time out - could retain his place.

Kaine Kesler-Hayden has recovered and should make the squad, but Frank Lampard remains without four players for the trip to London.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Rushworth; Van Ewijk, Pinnock, Thomas, Dasilva; Yirenkyi, Grimes; Thomas-Asante, Rudoni, Mason-Clark; Awoniyi

Unavailable: Amenda (Injured), Woolfenden (Injured), Eccles (Injured), Wright (Injured)

Questionable:

Key stats

  • Coventry lead the Premier League head-to-head by eight wins to seven, with three draws, yet goals are level at 25 apiece.
  • This is the first Premier League meeting at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Coventry won four of their nine Premier League visits to White Hart Lane (D2 L3), including 2-0 in the first Premier League meeting in August 1992.
  • Spurs won the last meeting 3-0 at White Hart Lane in March 2001.
  • Coventry have won back-to-back Premier League games for the first time since 2001. Their 4-1 win over Newcastle was their first Premier League home win since April 2001.
  • Tottenham are winless in six Premier League games (D3 L3). Their 3 points is their second-lowest total after six games of a Premier League season (2 in 2008/09).
  • Spurs' three goals is their second-fewest after six games (two in 2006/07). Coming into Matchweek 7, they and Coventry have failed to score in four games each, the most in the division.
  • Spurs have won one of their last 10 home Premier League games (D3 L6), and won only three of 19 at home last season (D6 L10).
  • Spurs have two clean sheets this season, and their matches have averaged 2.00 goals, the lowest in the division coming into Matchweek 7.
  • Kick-off quirk: since 2015/16, Spurs have won nine of their 17 Premier League games kicking off at 20:00 on a Monday (D5 L3). Coventry's only one was the 4-1 against Newcastle last week.
  • Coventry have won eight of their 33 Premier League games on a Monday (D12 L13).
  • On this day (19 October), Spurs have won four of nine Premier League games (D1 L4), most recently 4-1 against West Ham in 2024.

Tottenham vs Coventry prediction

De Zerbi will hope that his decision to take his Tottenham squad on a warm-weather training camp this past week will spark them into action, and there were certainly some signs of fight in last week's late draw with Man Utd.

With two straight victories though, Coventry are on a high and will relish the prospect of a second successive Monday Night Football fixture. They will be well aware, too, of Tottenham's torrid record in their own stadium.

You have to think, given the undeniable talent in the Spurs camp, that they will kick into gear at some point, but the visitors have their tails up at the moment and will be up for the fight.

We can see both teams scoring in this one, in what could be one of the more entertaining Premier League fixtures of the round.

Tottenham vs Coventry tip: Both teams to score
