A bottom two basement battle caps off this weekend’s Bundesliga action as bottom-placed Borussia Monchengladbach takes on Hoffenheim

Borussia Monchengladbach preview: Close but no reward

For the third league game this season, Borussia Monchengladbach finished within one goal of an opponent last weekend. Unfortunately for them though, they were once again on the wrong side of the result, losing 2-1 to FC Cologne. That extends their losing run to five matches and they are still rooted to the bottom of the Bundesliga table without a point gained.

Whilst Alexander Blessin has only had one game in charge so far, it’s easy to see the mammoth size of the task he has on his hands. This Gladbach side has such little confidence and such little question, although they battling spirit cannot be called into question.

Hoffenheim preview: Ilzer’s seat red hot

The pressure continues to grow on Christian Ilzer, with the Hoffenheim head coach needing a result and needing one pronto as his side currently finds themselves in the automatic relegation places, having lost twice to Paderborn and Hamburg respectively since picking up that first league win of the season against Stuttgart last month.

Both those defeats, saw Hoffenheim ship three goals, giving their offense simply far too much to do in a bid to get anything from each game. After leading by two goals to one at home to Hamburg last time out, being reduced to ten men was a disaster and led to Hoffenheim conceding twice in the final ten minutes plus stoppage time to lose 2-3.

Borussia Monchengladbach team news: Quartet on injured list

Borussia Monchengladbach will be without Castrop for the visit of Hoffenheim, along with Honorat, Itakura and Leopold, hardly ideal for what is such a big game.

Predicted XI (3-4-3): Nicolas: Hashioka, Diks, Chiarodia: Scally, Uno, Sander, Ullrich: Bolin, Lidberg, Mohya

Unavailable: Castrop (Injured), Honorat (Injured), Itakura (Injured), Leopold (Injured)

Questionable: Kuhn (Injured)

Hoffenheim team news: Red rules out Bernardo

Bernardo will be missing through suspension after being given his marching orders last weekend vs Hamburg, whilst both Hajdari and Wimmer are injury absentees.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Baumann: Coufal, Kabak, Machida, Rots: Conte, Avdullahu, Burger, Daghim: Lemperle, Asllani

Unavailable Bernardo (Suspended), Hajdari (Injured), Wimmer (Injured)

Questionable:

Will Hoffenheim jump out of the relegation places?

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Hoffenheim prediction

Whilst you can argue that it’s too early to call this a ‘six-pointer’, it definitely feels significant when you consider how terrible a season it’s been so far for both Borussia Monchengladbach and Hoffenheim. Defeat for the latter could easily lead to the departure of their head coach and in the case of Gladbach, leave them still without a single point.

Conceding goals remains the biggest problem for both of these sides. No backline has given up more than Gladbach’s 18 in the Bundesliga, whilst Hoffenheim are averaging well over two goals conceded per league game. It bodes well for this contest from an entertainment perspective and with over 2.5 goals scored in all ten matches so far involving at least one of these two teams, the same outcome is well worth backing here.

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Hoffenheim tip: Over 2.5 goals
