Holstein Kiel Preview: Battle against the drop

Following their promotion to the top-flight last season, Holstein Kiel have struggled throughout the campaign but a late season burst is giving them a chance of survival as they begin the match day sitting just a point behind Heidenheim in the relegation playoff place.

After a thrilling, last gasp 4-3 defeat of Borussia Monchengladbach a couple of weeks ago, they followed that up with another impressive performance as they defeated Augsburg by three goals to one at the Augsburg Arena last weekend.

Freiburg Preview: Freiburg going for UCL

In contrast, Freiburg head into the final couple of games searching for a top four berth and UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time in their history despite long-term manager and club legend Christian Streich being replaced by Julian Schuster last summer.

They looked to have all but sealed their place with Europe’s elite next season when they took a 2-0 lead against Bayer Leverkusen at SC Stadion last weekend but they conceded twice late on to last year’s German champions due to goals from Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah.

Holstein Kiel Team News: Remberg suspended

Holstein Kiel will be without midfielder Nicolai Remberg as he is missing through suspension for this one. They also have several key injury concerns, whilst the excellent and in-form Shuto Machino is also an injury doubt for the hosts, too.

Predicted XI (3-4-1-2): Dahne; Becker, Johansson, Zec; Rosenboom, Holtby, Gigovic, Tolkin; Skrzybski; Bernhardsson, Machino

Unavailable: Kleine-Bekel (Injured), Komenda (Injured), Nekic (Injured), Remberg (Suspended), Erras (Concussion), Kelati (Injured)

Questionable: Machino (Injured)

Freiburg Team News: A few doubts

As they make the trip to Kiel for a crucial clash this weekend, Freiburg are dealing with a few injury doubts for this one such as defender Manuel Gulde, midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh and attacker Lucas Holer.

Predicted XI (4-4-1-1): Muller; Rosenfelder, Ginter, Lienhart, Makengo; Doan, Eggestein, Osterhage, Grifo; Manzambi; Adamu

Unavailable:

Questionable: Gulde (Injured), Kyereh (Injured), Holer (Injured)

Holstein Kiel vs Freiburg Prediction

Holstein Kiel have shown some fight right at the very end of the campaign but there will be a concern that the hosts have left things too late. However, the form of Shuto Machino and Andreas Bernhardsson in attack is giving them an excellent chance as they now take on a Freiburg side that will travel to Kiel themselves looking to get on the front foot with UEFA Champions League hopes. This should be a thriller and could well be a dramatic encounter.
