Holger Rune beat Roberto Carballes Baena on Tuesday night 7-6 6-3 and the fourth seed will have been relatively happy with his performance. He will want to step up a level in the round of 16 especially against an opponent who he has never beaten in three previous meetings.
Brandon Nakashima is ranked 29 places below Rune at 42 in the world but he has an excellent record having beaten the Dane in three previous encounters. The first came at the Next Gen Finals back in 2021 but they met in 2023 in Shanghai and then the US Open last year and Nakashima won those two 6-0 6-2 and 6-2 6-1 6-4 respectively.
Nakashima has dominated him and that will surely weigh on Rune’s mind coming into this one. Nakashima was not at his best against Benjamin Bonzi as he won 7-6 7-5 in the first round but he too will know he needs to step it up here. Nakashima has the edge in recent form and also in their previous meetings, so he gets our vote here.
