In the first-leg of this tie between the Maltese and Lithuanian champions, the Hamrun Spartans suffered a 2-0 loss to Zalgiris in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius. Zalgiris broke the deadlock just before the hour mark via Liviu Antal, before they then sealed a 2-0 victory thanks to a late strike from Kassim Hadji.
Hamrun Spartans haven’t got much European pedigree, and have only in the last few years returned to the very top of Maltese football. Zalgiris, on the other hand, do appear to be one of the next teams from relative ‘minnow’ leagues to reach the league phase of UEFA competition this season.
With home advantage, Hamrun will fancy their chances of taking the game to Zalgiris, and that could result in it being quite an open and entertaining affair in Malta.
