THE LOWDOWN

OSASUNA

Jago Arrasate’s Osasuna have endured something of a fairly underwhelming 2023/24 campaign. Beaten in the playoff round of the UEFA Europa Conference League, they have started La Liga with just four victories in their 14 matches so far this season as they languish in the bottom-half of the table, looking over their shoulder.

The Pamplona-based club come into this one on the back of a 3-1 hammering at the hands of a struggling Villarreal side in their last outing, last weekend, following the November international break. That continued their poor run of form and the hosts have now managed to collect just one point from their last four Liga matches.

REAL SOCIEDAD

Under the management of Imanol Aguacil, Real Sociedad begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top six and the European qualifying spots. The Basque club were held to a goalless draw by Red Bull Salzburg in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League in midweek, following on from back-to-back wins in La Liga either side of the November international break.

La Real, under Aguacil, are one of the most intense pressing teams in European football and they have suffered just one defeat in their last nine matches across all competitions. They have been a little more effective and efficient in the final third this season, too, with 25 goals scored in their 14 games.

THE TEAM NEWS

OSASUNA

Osasuna have several injury concerns with the likes of Ruben Pena, Enrique Barja and Darko Brasanac all unavailable for the visit of La Real.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Herrera; Areso, Catena, David Garcia, Mojica; Moncayola, Lucas Torro; Avila, Oroz, Gomez; Budimir

UNAVAILABLE: Pena (Injured), Barja (Injured), Brasanac (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

REAL SOCIEDAD

Carlos Fernandez will be missing for the trip to Pamplona to face Osasuna and Martin Merquelanz is also a doubt for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Remiro; Odriozola, Elustondo, Zubeldia, Munoz; Mendez, Zubimendi, Turrientes; Oyarzabal, Cho, Zakharyan

UNAVAILABLE: Fernandez (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Merquelanz (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Calling this a derby match will cause anger in some parts so lets just suggest it is a fairly local rivalry. Osasuna, in that case, will hope that the form book does ‘go out of the window’ because they are struggling and, surprisingly, being dragged down towards the bottom three and the relegation places. Real Sociedad, as mentioned, are an intense team and that intensity means this could be a tough month before regrouping over the winter break. La Real are favourites but a thriller for the neutral is not to be expected at El Sadar.
