THE LOWDOWN
EMPOLI
Aurelio Andreazzoli returned for another spell in charge of Empoli earlier this season and the Florence-based club have slightly improved but they remain very much in the Serie A relegation battle. They begin the 15th match day of the 2023/24 campaign sitting just a point and a place outside of the bottom three.
They have been difficult to watch, too, with just nine goals scored in their 14 matches so far this season; which is the fewest of any team in Serie A. A third of those goals came in a 4-3 defeat to Sassuolo a couple of weeks ago before they then shared a 1-1 draw with a similarly out of form side, Genoa, last weekend.
LECCE
Lecce, coached by former Benevento coach Roberto D’Aversa, had a bright start to the season but have slipped away into the middle-of-the-table after 14 matches. They come into this one on the back of three successive score draws in Serie A against Bologna, Hellas Verona and AC Milan either side of the November international break.
Those draws have extended their current winless run of form to ten matches across all competitions since they defeated a newly-promoted, ten-man Genoa side in mid-September. Remarkably, though, seven of their last eight matches have ended up with both teams scoring, including their last five matches.
THE TEAM NEWS
EMPOLI
Empoli remain without the same couple of absentees for the visit of Lecce this weekend with Giuseppe Pezzella and Tommaso Baldanzi out.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Berisha; Bereszynski, Ismajli, Luperto, Cacace; Fazzini, Ranocchia, Maleh; Cambiaghi, Caputo, Maldini
UNAVAILABLE: Pezzella (Injured), Baldanzi (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
LECCE
Jeppe Corfitzen is out injured for this weekend with Mohamed Kaba a doubt for the game against Empoli on Monday evening.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Falcone; Gendrey, Pongracic, Baschirotto, Dorgu; Gonzalez, Ramadani; Strefezza, Oudin, Banda; Krstovic
UNAVAILABLE: Corfitzen (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Kaba (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
This one is a little tough to call in terms of a result as both sides appear set for a sustained battle against the drop for the remainder of this season. Something that the two sides have in common in the last few weeks, though, is an ability to attack their opposition and prove genuinely potent in the final third so, regardless of how comes out on top in Florence, both teams scoring would appear a good bet for this one.
