THE LOWDOWN

CAGLIARI

Under the management of former Chelsea and Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri, Cagliari begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom three and the relegation places with two victories in their 14 matches so far this season. They had been winless in their opening 11 matches before a mini spurt before the November international break.

The Sardinians now come into this one on the back of a slender 1-0 defeat in the capital against Lazio in their most recent outing, last weekend. They went down to ten men mid-way through the first-half of that one with Antoine Makoumbou being sent off. They have remained in good form in terms of their performances.

SASSUOLO

Former Empoli boss, Alessio Dionisi, is in charge of a Sassuolo side that have been frankly bizarre throughout the 2023/24 campaign. They have managed just four victories in their 14 matches so far this season as they sit in the bottom-half of the table but two of those wins have come against the top two in the Serie A table, Inter and Juventus.

The visitors come into this one on the back of a controversial 2-1 defeat at home to Roma in their most recent outing, last weekend. Sassuolo did take a 25th minute lead in that match via Matheus Henrique but Daniel Boloca’s second-half red card was then followed by the Romans turning the game around.

THE TEAM NEWS

CAGLIARI

Cagliari remain without Marko Rog due to injury, whilst Antoine Makoumbou is suspended for this weekend’s visit of Sassuolo.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Scuffet; Goldaniga, Dossena, Hatzidiakos; Zappa, Prati, Nandez, Azzi; Viola; Petagna, Lapadula

UNAVAILABLE: Makoumbou (Suspended), Rog (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

SASSUOLO

Sassuolo have a couple of suspension issues this weekend with both Daniel Boloca and Domenico Berardi out, whilst Pedro Obiang is a doubt.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Consigli; Toljan, Tressoldi, Erlic, Vina; Henrique, Racic; Defrel, Thorstvedt, Lauriente; Pinamonti

UNAVAILABLE: Boloca (Suspended), Berardi (Suspended), Viti (Injured), Alvarez (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Obiang (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Claudio Ranieri’s Cagliari have suffered just two defeats in their last seven matches across all competitions. Those two defeats have come away to Lazio and Juventus as Ranieri begins to work his magic as Cagliari seek to avoid the drop. They face a Sassuolo side that perform well against the better teams in the division but have struggled against pretty much everyone else so, especially with their home advantage, backing Cagliari appears the way to go for this one.
