THE LOWDOWN
RENNES
Over the November international break, Bruno Genesio resigned as manager of Stade Rennais and was replaced by the returning Julien Stephan. They had managed just two Ligue 1 victories until that point and, even with the summer sales of Jeremy Doku and Lovro Majer, were significantly underperforming their pre-season expectations.
However, under Stephan, they come into this one on the back of two victories and a defeat in Ligue 1 and the UEFA Europa League. Rennes began his reign with an impressive 3-1 defeat of Stade de Reims before comfortably defeating Maccabi Haifa by three goals to nil. They do, though, come into this one on the back of a 2-0 defeat away to an improving Marseille at Stade Velodrome.
MONACO
Coached by former Borussia Monchengladbach manager, Adi Hutter, Monaco begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top three and the UEFA Champions League spots. The Monagasque come into this on the back of a comfortable and impressive 2-0 defeat of Montpellier Herault in their most recent outing, last weekend.
The principality club are in a good position to return to European football with their intense and aggressive style of football, pressurising the opportunity but often leaving the door open for the opposition. For example, they have conceded 19 goals in 14 games with only six teams conceding more goals than them so far this season.

This one has the potential to be a bit of a thriller on Saturday afternoon. The improvement of Stade Rennais has been almost immediate but it could be put down to being more of a reversion to the mean with them significantly underperforming prior to that. They now face a Monaco side that will attempt to get at any team in the division, let alone a side that have shown themselves to be susceptible defensively throughout the campaign so both teams scoring would appear a good bet for this one.
