Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool begin the final match day of 2023 sitting at the top-of-the-table with just one defeat in their 19 matches so far this season. The Reds did recently face the rare frustration of being held to back-to-back draws at Anfield by Manchester United and then Arsenal prior to Christmas.
After those draws, though, they edged past Lancastrian strugglers Burnley on Boxing Day; winning by a goal to nil at Turf Moor in their most recent outing. The home team have been a little gung-ho at times this season but have the best defensive record in the league ahead of the weekend with just 16 conceded so far.
NEWCASTLE UNITED
Things are going a little off the rails at Newcastle United. Following their elimination from the UEFA Champions League a couple of weeks ago, The Magpies’ domestic form has continued to be quite underwhelming as they slip down the table and seemingly must now fight for a top-half finish this season.
They come into this one on the back of being beaten by three goals to one by Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day, after taking a first-half lead. That loss means they have managed just one victory in their last seven matches across all competitions with that win coming against a Fulham side that went down to ten men early on in the match.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Scotland international left-back Andrew Robertson is ‘not even close to training’, which is a concern on the left-side of the defence as Kostas Tsimikas is also unavailable for this weekend.
Mohamed Salah is available for one final match before heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations, whilst Alexis Mac Allister is also potentially available after returning from an injury that has seen him miss recent matches.

THE PREDICTION
This is often built up as one of the most entertaining and fascinating clashes in Premier League history but its reputation may precede itself in this one, with the result actually appearing a bit of a foregone conclusion. Not many Liverpool teams will go three home games without a victory and they are taking on a Newcastle side that just appear to be in a bit of disarray, both on and off the field. As a result of that, a fairly comfortable home win is to be expected for this one on Monday evening.
