Cote d’Ivoire preview: Back on the global stage

Emerse Fae began his reign in charge of Cote d'Ivoire midway the 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations in 2024 and he led Les Elephants to an unlikely AFCON title when it appeared as though they were going out in the group stages.

The Ivorians haven't been at a FIFA World Cup since 2014 when in Brazil. They have quite a varied squad with an experienced midfield and a fair bit of depth in midfield with some notably exciting attackers, courtesy of a couple such as Elye Wahi and Ange-Yoan Bonny switching their international allegiance.

Ecuador preview: Impressive Ecuador

Perhaps one of the likeliest and strongest so-called 'dark horses', Ecuador head into this summer's FIFA World Cup with a simply outstanding backline and defensive record from qualification, under the management of Argentine coach Sebastian Beccacece.

Ecuador were the only team to concede fewer than double figures in their 18-match CONMEBOL qualification campaign for FIFA World Cup 2026. The Ecuadoreans conceded just five goals in their 18 matches with a fair bit of depth in both defence and defensive midfield.

  • Cote d’Ivoire have lost all three of their FIFA World Cup matches against South American opposition — each against a different team: 2-1 to Argentina in 2006, 3-1 to Brazil in 2010, and 2-1 to Colombia in 2014.
  • Cote d’Ivoire have recorded one win, one draw and one loss in their FIFA World Cup opening fixtures, with their sole victory arriving in their latest participation when they beat Japan 2-1.

  • This is Ecuador’s fifth FIFA World Cup. Having also participated at Qatar 2022, they are featuring in successive editions for the second time and have only missed out on the finals twice since making their debut at the 2002 edition.
  • Ecuador’s best FIFA World Cup performance came in 2006, when they reached the round of 16. They finished as runners‑up to host nation Germany in a group also featuring Poland and Costa Rica, before falling 1-0 to England in the knockout stage.
  • Ecuador’s all-time leading scorer Enner Valencia is also the record marksman for his country at the World Cup with a total of six goals; he notched three goals at both the 2014 and the 2022 editions.

Cote d’Ivoire vs Ecuador prediction

Ecuador are a bit reliant on former West Ham United striker Enner Valencia. That is perhaps why they have become so focused on ensuring their impressive defence has the best system and style to benefit from with a focus on control. In what is a strong and seemingly evenly-matched, intriguing group alongside Germany and Curacao, this opener is quite important. The Ivorians have quality but they may not have enough to break down the strong defence of the South Americans and the avoidance of defeat for both sides would seem a decent bet with a low-scoring encounter beckoning.

Cote d’Ivoire vs Ecuador betting tip: Under 2.5 goals
