Cote d’Ivoire preview: Back on the global stage
Emerse Fae began his reign in charge of Cote d'Ivoire midway the 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations in 2024 and he led Les Elephants to an unlikely AFCON title when it appeared as though they were going out in the group stages.
The Ivorians haven't been at a FIFA World Cup since 2014 when in Brazil. They have quite a varied squad with an experienced midfield and a fair bit of depth in midfield with some notably exciting attackers, courtesy of a couple such as Elye Wahi and Ange-Yoan Bonny switching their international allegiance.
In their pre-tournament friendlies, the Ivorians have put in some strong performances. They hammered Korea Republic and defeated Scotland in March before a surprise 2-1 win against France last week.
Ecuador preview: Impressive Ecuador
Perhaps one of the likeliest and strongest so-called 'dark horses', Ecuador head into this summer's FIFA World Cup with a simply outstanding backline and defensive record from qualification, under the management of Argentine coach Sebastian Beccacece.
Ecuador were the only team to concede fewer than double figures in their 18-match CONMEBOL qualification campaign for FIFA World Cup 2026. The Ecuadoreans conceded just five goals in their 18 matches with a fair bit of depth in both defence and defensive midfield.
Ecuador head into the tournament on the back of a 2-1 defeat of Saudi Arabia before a more straightforward 3-0 hammering of Guatemala in their pre-tournament friendlies a few days' later.
Cote d’Ivoire team news: On the attack
Clement Akpa had to withdraw through injury earlier this month, replaced by Istanbul Basaksehir defender Christopher Operi but that was that appears to have been the only issue for the Ivorians to deal with in terms of fitness issues in the build-up.
On a night where Cote d'Ivoire could have been expected to be more conservative in their friendly win against France, Fae actually went with a 4-4-2 system and that may well be how they go from the off here, with the biggest debate being between Nicolas Pepe, Simon Adingra and Amad Diallo on the right-wing - but we think the former may win the race after a match-winning assist against the French.
Emerse Fae has confirmed that Roma defender Evan Ndicka is sidelined for their opener, with Ousmane Diomande competing with Emmanuel Agbadou for the starting spot alongside Wilfried Singo at the back for the Ivorians. Odilon Kossounou is also pushing to start after recovering from his own injury.

Ecuador team news: A superb defence
On loan at River Plate from Chelsea, young midfielder Kendry Paez suffered an injury against Guatemala but he is said to be 'fine' by Ecuador boss Sebastian Beccacece. Alan Minda and John Yeboah also picked up knocks but Beccacece was also confident that there was nothing too serious for them.
With Moises Caicedo in front, Ecuador have one of the best defensive records and defences, in terms of personnel, at this tournament, boasting the likes of Willian Pacho, Piero Hincapie and Joel Ordonez, as well as flying full-back Pervis Estupinan.
Having scored nearly half of their goals in qualification, captain Enner Valencia is key for Ecuador and he should still start here, despite a slight calf injury issue.

Cote d’Ivoire vs Ecuador prediction
Cote d'Ivoire's selection and formation may well indicate more attacking intent than previously expected, especially with their performance against France last week. However, they scored just 25 goals in ten games in CAF qualification with 16 of those 25 games coming in matches against the Seychelles. Given that and the strength of this Ecuadorean defence, a low-scoring clash also seems likely. With both sides knowing that four points will basically see them through and with Curacao to come, risks may not be taken here - and these are two already risk averse sides and so under 2.5 goals seems a decent bet.
