Alexander Zverev booked a spot in his third Grand Slam final in a row with a resilient win over Karen Khachanov.
The top seed was not at his best but came up clutch in two tie-breaks to post a 6-3 7-6 7-6 victory and reach a sixth Major final.
The German will now face Ben Shelton for a sixth time after the American beat his compatriot Frances Tiafoe 4-6 6-3 6-3 7-5 to become the first Black American man to claim a spot in a US Open final since 1972.
The eighth seed has handled the expectation from the home support well so far, but this is his maiden Major final and also sees him trying to make a dent in a 5-0 head-to-head, which Zverev owns.
That match-up may not be as significant as it seems though, given the Davis Cup tie atmosphere in favour of Shelton and the fact the top seed hasn’t played his best tennis throughout this tournament.
It may well be worth the punt on Showtime Ben to deliver in his homeland, but a safer bet would be on a large number of games, potential tie breaks and it going beyond three sets.
