The Italian conjured up an outstanding tweener lob on his way to a four-set triumph against the Aussie to follow up his comeback from two sets down versus Francisco Comesana.

The fifth seed has the know-how to go deep at Majors having followed up a runner-up finish at the French Open by reaching the last eight at Wimbledon in the summer.

Flavio also has the flamboyant nature to excel in the New York atmosphere, so could go far again if he gets to feature in some night sessions.

Alexander Blockx will have other ideas, of course, with the 28th seed easing through the draw so far against names he’d be expected to defeat.

This will be their third meeting with the match-up tied at 1-1, although Cobolli did follow up a loss on the Monte Carlo clay with a three-set victory on the Cincinnati hardcourts recently.
