Zeynep Sonmez did show some battling qualities at the US Open. She won her first-round match against Katie Volynets in comfortable fashion and then levelled up her match in round two against seeded Marta Kostyuk. She recovered from a break down at the beginning of the decider but Kostyuk came back to win a close match in three sets. Despite that valiant effort, Sonmez has failed to make a key impact this year, and her best result is a solitary quarter-final appearance at the Merida Open in late February.
It's been a topsy-turvy campaign for the 38-year-old Tatjana Maria. There have been some sensational highs, which include a title at Queen’s Club and a final appearance in Newport during a strong grass court season. Nevertheless, her recent form has been poor, and she was knocked out in round one of the US Open by Maria Sakkari in straight sets.
Sonmez did show more promise in New York and this is unlikely to be an easy first-round match for Maria despite being the higher ranked player. A three set encounter is certainly not out of the equation.
