Sonay Kartal vs Jelena Ostapenko prediction

Sonay Kartal continued her exceptional return from injury as she defeated world number six Elina Svitolina to progress to the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open. Kartal, who had already beaten former top-10 players Belinda Bencic and Jasmine Paolini in previous rounds, held her nerve in the deciding set to win 6-2 2-6 6-4. The victory catapults the 24-year-old Briton 83 places forward to 87 in the live WTA rankings as she heads deeper into the tournament.

Her next opponent is Jelena Ostapenko. The Latvian won in straight sets against Diana Shnaider in her quarter-final match. Shnaider was 5-2 up and served for the first set, but Ostapenko fought back and edged clear in the tiebreak. That proved to be decisive, as the 2017 French Open champion raced clear in the second to win 7-6 (6) 6-1 after one hour and 45 minutes.

The head-to-head is 1-1 between the pair. Ostapenko defeated Kartal in Eastbourne last year, with the Brit exacting revenge just six days later at Wimbledon. Kartal deserves immense credit for her run at this event, and her steady consistency from the baseline could pose problems for Ostapenko’s high-risk power game.
