Rafael Jodar reached another Masters 1000 semi-final in his debut season on tour after coming from a set down yet again to beat Casper Ruud. The 20-year-old has trailed after the first set in all four of his matches at the Shanghai Masters, but he turned things around again to win 4-6 6-4 6-3. Jodar is now up to ninth in the Race to Turin live rankings - effectively putting him in the final qualifying spot for the season finale due to Jannik Sinner shutting down his year early.
He faces former world number one Daniil Medvedev next. The Russian, who won this event in 2019, overcame Tommy Paul in three sets. Medvedev’s level dropped in the second set, but he regrouped well to win 6-3 1-6 6-3. He saved 11 out of 14 break point opportunities, and has now won 11 of his last 12 matches in total.
Jodar continues to impress, and he has shown remarkable resilience throughout the tournament. However, Medvedev’s experience, returning ability and strong recent hard-court form give him the edge.
