The Ukrainian raced clear in the first set but had to come from a break down in the second to win 6-1 6-4. She will now be aiming to advance to the semi-finals of the event for the first time in 12 years.
Her next opponent is Sonay Kartal. The Briton continued her strong return from injury as she thrashed Jasmine Paolini in the round-of-16. Kartal comfortably got past Belinda Bencic in round three and only conceded two games against Paolini, winning 6-2 6-0. The 24-year-old missed six months of the season due to a back problem, but she has won five of her seven matches since resuming competitive action.
Svitolina leads the head-to-head 2-0. They faced each other right at the start of the year in the quarter-finals of the Auckland Open, with the world number six prevailing in a deciding set tiebreak. Kartal has the game to make this competitive, but Svitolina remains the more likely winner.
