Alejandro Davidovich Fokina reached his third final of the season after coming from a set down to beat top seed Alexander Zverev at the Shanghai Masters. The Spaniard, who will move back inside the top 15 of the world rankings after this event, grew into the match and went on to win 5-7 6-4 6-3. This will be his second Masters 1000 final, following his 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters final loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas. He also has now won nine consecutive matches in China, after success at the Chengdu Open last month.
He will face compatriot Rafael Jodar. The 20-year-old broke new ground in his debut season on tour, progressing to his first Masters final after an impressive win over former world number one and 2019 champion Daniil Medvedev. Jodar returned superbly and consistently created opportunities, winning 6-3 6-4.
Both players have performed strongly, but Jodar is likely put greater pressure on Davidovich Fokina’s serve, and his aggressive baseline play could prove decisive.
