Maja Chwalinska continued her best ever run at a WTA 1000 event after beating compatriot Iga Swiatek in straight sets to advance to the final of the Wuhan Open. The Pole saved two sets points at 5-3 down in the first set, with Swiatek then taking a medical time out to deal with a leg issue. That injury hampered Swiatek for the rest of the match, as Chwalinska won 10 of the next 11 games to seal a 7-5 6-1 victory.
She faces Sonay Kartal next. The 24-year-old became the first British woman since Johanna Konta at Rome in 2019 to advance to the final of a WTA 1000 event after overcoming Jelena Ostapenko in the semi-finals. Ostapenko was 4-1 up and held set points in both sets, but Kartal fought back fiercely to win 7-6 (9) 7-6 (5). Having missed six months of the season due to a severe back stress fracture, Kartal is now just one match away from the biggest title of her career by quite some distance.
