Zeynep Sonmez enters the main draw of the tournament as a qualifier. Her best result of the season was a quarter-final appearance at the Merida Open, while she also reached the third-round at the Australian Open. The Turk is currently ranked just inside the top 80 in the world rankings.

Jasmine Paolini is her first-round opponent. The Italian, who is a two-time Grand Slam finalist, is the fifth seed at the event. She has not enjoyed the strongest of campaigns up to this point, with her best finish also occurring in Merida, as she reached the last four. Paolini was in Billie Jean King Cup action for Italy last time out, winning her singles match against Himeno Sakatsume of Japan in straight sets.
