Zeynep Sonmez is through to the next round of the Miami Open after a straight sets win over Beatriz Haddad Maia. The Turk went an early break down but quickly took control of the match, winning eight games in a row at one point as she sealed a 6-3 6-2 victory after one hour and 25 minutes.
Sonmez now faces Belinda Bencic. The Swiss’ best result here is a semi-final finish in 2022. Bencic beat Storm Hunter and Elise Mertens in straight sets to make the round-of-16 at Indian Wells. However, she would go no further after a first loss to Jessica Pegula. Bencic began the year with fantastic performances at the United Cup, but she is yet to reach the same heights since, with no quarter-final appearances.
Bencic should enjoy the quicker conditions in Miami, but Sonmez can still create problems if her game is firing in the opening stages of this match.
