Yuliia Starodubtseva continued her good form as she beat Moyuka Uchijima in three sets to book her place in the next round of the Madrid Open. The Ukrainian, who reached the final of the Charleston Open earlier this month, recovered from a slump in the second set to win 6-3 1-6 6-3 after two hours and three minutes.
She now faces Jaqueline Cristian. The Romanian received a bye in round one. Cristian competed at the Open de Rouen last week, miraculously winning her first-round match against Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah, but then falling to a loss against Katie Boulter in three sets. Her best result of the season was a quarter-final appearance in Adelaide at the start of the year, though she also impressed at the Miami Open as she progressed to the round-of-16.
Cristian was not at her best last time out, and she could be challenged by Starodubtseva, who has won five of her last six tour-level matches.
