After early exits in Madrid and Rome, Yulia Putintseva decided to drop down and compete in a WTA 250 in Parma. After two wins as the number one seed, the Kazakhstani was forced to withdraw from the event before her quarter-final match due to injury. However, she is still competing in Strasbourg so soon after and will hope for a deep run ahead of the French Open. Her best run at a tournament this season was a semi-final appearance in Adelaide but that was all the way back in January.
Her opponent will be Rebecca Sramkova in the first-round. She has only competed in two events on clay over the last six weeks, with a first-round defeat in Madrid followed up by a second-round loss in Rome despite taking the first set against Grand Slam champion Jelena Ostapenko.
Putintseva, who was a quarter-finalist at the event in 2021, is the more accomplished player on tour and should have enough for victory.
