Yibing Wu has proven to be very competitive at Challenger level on clay over the past six weeks. He won a title in Sarasota and also advanced to the quarter-finals of an event in Aix-en-Provence earlier this month. He took Ethan Quinn to a deciding set but lost in three. His best ATP result overall was a quarter-final appearance at the Mexican Open back in February. He only competed in one Masters 1000 event on clay, losing in round one of the Madrid Open.
He faces Marcos Giron. The American last competed in the main draw of Hamburg as a lucky loser. He was close to an upset over Ben Shelton, losing in the deciding set tiebreak. His best result on clay this season was a quarter-final appearance at a Challenger event in Cagliari. Giron’s campaign began strongly in January, as he reached the semi-finals in Hong Kong and Auckland, but he hasn’t been able to rediscover that form since.
Wu may enter this match as a slight favourite, but Giron is still a tough player to beat over five sets.
