Yasmine Kabbaj notched up her first tour-level victory as she beat Berfu Cengiz in the first-round of the Morocco Open. The wildcard came from a break down in both sets to win 7-6 (3) 6-3. She became the fourth Moroccan player in the Open Era to win a WTA main draw match, and the first since Nadia Lalami in 2011.
She now takes on Tatjana Maria. The German beat Diae El Jardi in round one. Maria was largely untroubled as she won 6-2 6-4, and she will now face another Moroccan in the next round. She has struggled for consistency this season, though she did advance to the quarter-finals of the Open de Rouen a few weeks ago.
Maria is vastly more experienced at this level, and that may give her the edge against Kabbaj. She will be expected to come out on top, as she seeks a second last eight appearance of the campaign.
