Yannick Hanfmann last competed in Rome, winning his opening match against Hubert Hurkacz but then losing to Luciano Darderi in straight sets. Hanfmann was also beaten by Darderi in the final of the Chile Open earlier this year, which was the German’s best result of the season so far. The 34-year-old is ranked just inside the top 60 of the world rankings.
He faces Joao Fonseca in the first-round. The Brazilian has failed to back up his impressive run to the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters in recent weeks. He was beaten by fellow youngster Rafael Jodar in the third-round of the Madrid Open, and he then lost to Hamad Medjedovic in his next match in Rome.
Fonseca will be determined to make a deep run here on the eve of Roland Garros, and he will be expected to dominate the longer rallies with his ball striking. He is still a clear favourite for this one.
