The Chinese qualifier dismantled the veteran Frenchman to power to a 6-3 6-1 win and set a second round encounter with tenth seed Alexei Popyrin.
The Aussie has only won one of his last five matches but will be happy to be back on hardcourts.
However, Popyrin has only ever won one match in Washington heading into his fourth visit and all of these factors will give Wu belief that he can spring another upset.
Monfils was clearly not as motivated as we have seen him at other stages of 2025 and it remains to be seen if Wu can bring the same consistency and level against another big-hitter in the shape of the Aussie.
