Vilius Gaubas has competed in a flurry of clay court Challenger events over the past six weeks. He won the Open Menorca in early April and reached the final of another Challenger event in Rome three weeks later. This time however, despite being the top seed, he would fall to a three set defeat to Matteo Gigante. His most recent tournament was just last week in Mauthausen, but he could only make the second-round as Cristian Garian came from a set down to defeat the Lithuanian.
Damir Dzumhur has had an encouraging run on clay over the past month and a half. He reached the semi-finals of the Zadar Open and Bucharest Open in successive weeks, while he won two successive matches in Madrid, which included a fine display against 32nd seed Sebastian Baez, before a loss in the third-round against Matteo Arnaldi.
This is a pretty tough one to call as both players have shown themselves to be very capable on clay already this season. We favour the experience of Dzumhur to get over the line first but it could be a close encounter between the pair.
