Vilius Gaubas continued his amazing run in Rome with the best win of his career so far as he defeated 27th seed Denis Shapovalov 6-3 6-4. The 20-year-old Lithuanian now has two wins on the ATP Tour and can now look forward to a third-round clash with defending champion Alexander Zverev.

Zverev began the defence of his title with a comprehensive win over Camilo Ugo Carabelli, as the German raced to a 6-1 6-2 victory in just over an hour. The world number two is now on a seven-match winning streak at the event and is chasing his second title of the season after a win in Munich at the BMW Open last month.

Despite that title win, Zverev has also suffered some early losses this season, including at Monte-Carlo and Madrid on clay. He should have no such problems against Gaubas however, and though it has been an extraordinary tournament for the world number 154, we predict that a heavy defeat is on the cards.
