Victoria Mboko’s clay court season began in disappointing fashion as she lost her opening match in Madrid to Caty McNally in straight sets. The Canadian did not compete at the Italian Open but decided to participate in Strasbourg last week. She made it all the way to her third final of the year, but a 2026 title still alludes her as she was beaten by Emma Navarro in three sets.
Her first-round opponent at Roland Garros is Nikola Bartunkova. She only entered the main draw of Rome as a lucky loser, but she defeated Madison Keys on her way to the round-of-16, where she lost to Elina Svitolina. Her best result of the season was a quarter-final appearance in Ostrava, while she also beat Belinda Bencic at the Australian Open in January as she progressed to the third-round.
Bartunkova does seem to raise her game against higher-ranked players, and this isn’t the most ideal of first-round matches for Mboko. She is still a clear favourite, and she will hope to get off to a strong start.
