Valentin Vacherot booked his place in the next round of his home event as he beat Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets. Musetti was making his return from injury after withdrawing from the Miami Open. The Italian reached the final of this event last year and had a set point in the first set tiebreak, but Vacherot would reel off three points in a row to go in front. Vacherot served for the match at 5-4 in the second, with Musetti breaking back. Nevertheless, he broke again and sealed the win.
He now faces Hubert Hurkacz in the round-of-16. The Pole continued his resurgence as he eased past Fabian Marozsan. Hurkacz did not even concede a break point as he won 6-2 6-3 after one hour and 11 minutes.
Hurkacz has now won two matches in a row after a tough spell, and he is afforded time to set up his groundstrokes in these slower conditions. However, Vacherot will be driven to carry his progress forward in front of a home crowd.
