Valentin Royer was handed a wildcard ahead of his home event. He mostly features on the Challenger Tour and has had some success in recent times. He lost in the final of the Zadar Challenger to Borna Coric in late March and then followed that up with successive semi-finals in Barletta and Madrid. He then struggled during the rest of the clay season and could only make the last eight as the top seed at the Tunis Open most recently.
Roberto Carballes Baena is nursing a hip injury but has still declared himself for Roland Garros. He withdrew from a Turin Challenger and had to retire from his first-round match against Sebastian Ofner after losing the first set in Rome before that. Despite his recent struggles, the Spaniard did start his clay court season with a semi-final appearance in Marrakesh during the beginning of April.
There are question marks over Carballes Baena’s fitness and Royer, cheered on by a passionate home crowd, will relish the opportunity. We think the Frenchman may just edge this one and make it through to the second round.
