After a mid-table season, Union Berlin are aiming to push back towards those European places as Stuttgart manage multiple assignments.

Union Berlin preview: Back on track

After a rough 2023-24 campaign which saw Union Berlin battle against relegation and ultimately survive in dramatic fashion, avoiding the bottom three through goal difference, the 2024-25 season represented progress for Union, who managed to secure a safe 13th-place finish. However, this is a club who were recently in the Champions League and would love to get back to challenging for those European spots.

Union are led by Steffen Baumgart, who was appointed in December 2024 following the firing of Bo Svensson. So far, the likes of Robin Gosens and Kevin Volland have left the club this summer, with players such as Andrej Ilic and Ilyas Ansah being brought in.

Stuttgart preview: A balancing act

It’s been a couple of years to remember for Stuttgart under Sebastian Hoeness. After unexpectedly guiding his side to the Champions League in 2023-24, Hoeness ended Stuttgart’s 18-year major trophy drought in 2024-25, winning the DFB-Pokal after beating third tier Arminia Bielefeld in the final. Such achievements from Hoeness have drawn attention to him but so far, he is not for leaving Stuttgart.

But the biggest story of the summer from a Stuttgart point of view is whether they can keep-a-hold of young German star Nick Woltemade. Top-scorer at the 2025 UEFA Under-21 European Championships, Woltemade is generating significant interest from Bayern Munich and Stuttgart’s resolve could be tested before the window is over.

Union Berlin team news: Ansah expected to debut

It would be no surprise to see Steffen Baumgart hand a Bundesliga debut to Ilyas Ansah in attack, potential as a partner to fellow new signing Andrej Ilic. Illness could rule out Juranovic, whilst Stanley Nsoki is also doubtful.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Ronnow; Doekhi, Querfeld, Rothe; Trimmel, Khedira, Schafer, Haberer, Skov; Ilic, Ansah

Unavailable: Burcu (Injured), Tousart (Illness)

Questionable: Juranovic (Illness), Nsoki (Injured)

Stuttgart team news: Formidable strikeforce

The duo of Undav and Woltemade will be the focus of many leading into this one, although Stuttgart will not be able to call upon the likes of Silas, Stergiou and Zagadou as all are injured. Right-back Lorenz Assignon is suspended.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Nubel; Vagnoman, Jaquez, Chabot, Mittelstadt; Leweling, Karazor, Stiller, Fuhrich; Undav, Woltemade

Unavailable: Assignon (Suspended), Silas (Injured), Stergiou (Injured), Zagadou (Injured)

Questionable:

Union Berlin vs Stuttgart prediction

It remains to be seen as to whether Union Berlin will have substantially improved compared to last season. Whilst multiple players have been signed for fees, no notable needle-movers stand out at the moment and against a team like Stuttgart who can call upon the likes of Woltemade and Deniz Undav up front, that doesn’t bode well for the hosts.

With no European distractions until September, Stuttgart can lock in and focus all their attentions on the Bundesliga. Hoeness is such a smart coach, whose tactics suffocate opponents and makes Stuttgart extremely difficult to play against. With that proven dose of quality going forward, it’s well worth backing the visitors via the draw no bet market for extra security.
