Union Berlin preview: Much-needed win

Union Berlin recorded their first Bundesliga victory in a number of weeks last weekend, ending a streak of three league games without a win. It was a hard-fought win as well, defeating St. Pauli by a goal to nil on the road, not an easy task when considering that St. Pauli are fighting for survival.

As it stands, Union sit five points adrift of the top six and seventh-placed Heidenheim but three points here will significantly close that gap and extend their current unbeaten run in the Bundesliga to four games.

Heidenheim preview: Still rock bottom

Heidenheim currently sits on just five points and three points adrift of safety after falling to their eighth league defeat of the season, a comprehensive 0-3 loss at home to Borussia Monchengladbach as Heidenheim’s defensive woes continue to haunt them.

It’s now 26 goals conceded over the course of 11 Bundesliga fixtures, the worst record of any team in the division. You aren’t going to pick up points in the German top flight with those numbers against you, so improvement is desperately needed defensively on their part.

Union Berlin team news: Three up top

Expect Burke, Ilic and Ansah to lead the line again for Union in a three-pronged attack. Rothe will likely play at left-wing-back in the absence of Skov, whilst Juranovic could be picked over Trimmel on the right.

Predicted XI: (3-4-3): Ronnow; Doekhi, Querfeld, Leite; Juranovic, Khedira, Kemlein, Rothe; Burke, Ilic, Ansah

Unavailable: Skov (Injured)

Questionable:

Heidenheim team news: No surprises

Don’t expect any shocks among the Heidenheim starting line-up. Zivzivadze misses out through injury whilst the likes of Conteh, Feller, Kaufmann and Paqarada remain injured themselves.

Predicted XI: (4-2-3-1): Ramaj; Traore, Mainka, Siersleben, Fohrenbach; Schoppner, Dorsch; Ibrahimovic, Beck, Honsak; Pieringer

Unavailable: Conteh (Injured), Feller (Injured), Kaufmann (Injured), Paqarada (Injured), Zivzivadze (Injured)

Union Berlin vs Heidenheim prediction

This is the ideal game on paper for Union Berlin to back up their triumph over St. Pauli as they take on another opponent stuck down the bottom end of the table who cannot seem to stem the losses. Heidenheim have proven out of their depth over the course of the season so far and another long afternoon may be in store.

Expect a dominant showing from Union Berlin, but not a high volume of goals as the hosts haven’t been the most efficient from an attacking perspective across the season so far. But they should wind up too strong for Heidenheim.
