Ugo Humbert was challenged by teenager Justin Engel in the first-round of the Hamburg Open, but he still was able to progress to the next round. The Frenchman required a deciding set tiebreak as he claimed a 6-3 3-6 7-6 (2) victory. Humbert is yet to pick up back-to-back wins on clay this season.
His next opponent is Karen Khachanov. The Russian was also pushed to a tiebreak in the third set as he overcame Hugo Gaston in round one. Khachanov trailed the Frenchman after the first set, but he came back to win 3-6 6-3 7-6 (4). He seems to have found form again, having reached the Italian Open quarter-finals last time out, his best run at a Masters 1000 event since getting through to the final of the Canadian Open back in August.
The head-to-head is 1-1 between the pair, but this is their first match against each other on clay. Khachanov, a two-time French Open quarter-finalist, does have a stronger record on this surface compared to Humbert, and he will be regarded as the favourite.
