Tai Tuivasa: Can "Bam Bam" earn his first win since 2022?
Fan favorite, Tai Tuivasa (14-9), looks to snap a Tony Ferguson-esque six fight losing skid in front of his home crowd following a decision defeat to Tallison Teixeira during his comeback fight in January. Having fought the likes of Cyril Gane, Sergei Pavlovich, and Alexander Volkov to name but a few, Tuivasa has been in there with a who’s-who at heavyweight since joining the promotion as an undefeated prospect almost a decade ago. A self-professed brawler with chopping low kicks and bone-shattering KO power, Tuivasa is synonymous with his “shoey” celebration, climbing the cage to drink beer out of a shoe in the wake of a KO victory.
Louie Sutherland: Will "The Vanilla Gorilla" play spoiler in his third fight with the promotion?
Louie Sutherland (10-5) only made his UFC debut in October, but he’s already badly in need of a win heading into his third fight with the promotion. Despite having brief moments of success in both of his UFC bouts to date, the Englishman has succumbed to first round finishes in both fights to go 0-2, getting heel hooked by Valter Walker and losing by TKO to Brando Pericic less than a month ago. A former professional rugby prospect who traded the pitch for the cage, the PFL and Bellator alum is a heavy handed Muay Thai striker with above average cardio who likes to sling vicious shots in the pocket.
Tai Tuivasa vs Louie Sutherland prediction
If Tuivasa can’t win this one, then it’s truly curtains for the “Bam Bam” army.
Sutherland is undoubtedly dangerous; the man hits (and kicks) like a mack truck, literally breaking Valter Walker’s leg with the first low kick that he landed clean and wobbling top prospect Brando Pericic en route to a TKO defeat. However, outside of landing a fight ending shot in the early goings, he doesn’t appear to have a deep enough tool bag to pose a problem for most top heavyweights. He’s also taking this one on extremely short notice, and was TKO’d in fairly brutal fashion just over a month ago.
Tuivasa has undoubtedly declined, but this is the easiest fight on paper he’s had in years. “Bam Bam” may be 0-6 dating back to 2022, but he’s fought nothing but ranked opposition throughout that time. On the feet, he primarily struggles with explosive, athletic strikers, while his historic struggles on the ground don’t figure to play much of a part against a fighter who likes to stand and bang.
A clean right hand from the Englishman could well result in the upset, but we’re riding with the Aussie on this one. Tuivasa chops vicious leg kicks to set up a fight ending exchange in the opening stanza, leaving the arena shaking as he climbs atop the cage for his trademark “Shoey” celebration.
Prediction: Tai Tuivasa to win by first round KO
