Jack Della Maddalena: Boxing specialist, former champion looking to shut down doubters
Jack Della Maddalena (18-3) returns to the octagon for the first time since dropping his welterweight title to the GOAT, Islam Makhachev, via unanimous decision at UFC 322 last November. The 29-year-old Perth native captured the belt with a dominant five-round decision over Belal Muhammad at UFC 315, after a remarkable Contender Series to title run that included finishes over Randy Brown and Gilbert Burns, and a split decision win over Kevin Holland. JDM is one of the cleanest boxers in the division, holding up a tight compact guard, he digs to the body in extended combinations, and has shown elite head movement and counter-punching ability. The difficult times he’s had on the feet have only come against opponents that carried a wrestling threat.
Carlos Prates: The most feared knockout artist in the division
Carlos Prates (23-7) is one of the scariest names in the welterweight division, 13 of his last 13 wins have been by KO/TKO. All six of his UFC wins have come by walk-off knockouts, this guy was made for highlight reels. The 32-year-old Brazilian is fresh off a brutal second-round knockout of ex-champion Leon Edwards. Prates’ only loss in the UFC came against Ian Garry over five rounds, in a fight where the Irishman picked him apart with volume before nearly throwing the victory away in the final round. Prates has one of the deadliest backhands in MMA right now, slow starting but always hunting for the kill shot, his step-in knee and heavy leg kicks are also serious threats.
Jack Della Maddalena vs Carlos Prates prediction
Holy moly. We as fight fans, have been absolutely blessed with this beautiful match up… this fight will be a lot closer than most are giving it credit for. Prates is the more dynamic and lethal striker, with one-shot knockout power that can end any fight in any round. JDM is the cleaner technical boxer with elite volume, tidy boxing defence, and a chin that has held up so far in his UFC outings. Both fighters have genuine paths to victory.
Ian Garry has already given the blueprint needed to beat Prates – control the range, throw constant volume, and most importantly, don’t give Prates the time he needs to plant his feet for a kill shot. The key difference between the Garry fight and what JDM will produce is that Garry uses a long, intercepting guard that takes some of the threat away from Prates’ shots, whereas JDM holds a tighter, closer guard that relies more on head movement and blocking. Expect Prates to land more clean shots on JDM than he did on Garry, but JDM’s chin should hold up against most of what slips through his guard. JDM is also a far more committed body puncher than Garry, and Prates’ high muay thai guard allows Jack to play into that.
Prates does his best work when he initiates first, against opponents like Garry, who beat his output, he tends to absorb shots behind his guard, and wait for an opening, it never really came against Garry. JDM has the gas tank to maintain the same output Garry did and more, we saw it against Belal. I see Prates fading in the later rounds, and his volume dropping as he hunts for the one shot, JDM should be technical enough to avoid the haymakers and outwork him to the bell. That being said, we’ve not really seen JDM face a striker of Prates’ threat yet, and that step-in knee could be really deadly in this match up.
The bookmakers have this one right with the odds being so close. Whichever side you lean, do not miss this fight!
Prediction: Jack Della Maddalena to win by decision
