JJ Aldrich: A battle-tested veteran looking to turn back another prospect
A UFC fighter for the better part of a decade, JJ Aldrich (15-7) returns following an upset win over Jamey-Lyn Horth in her last appearance. A well-rounded veteran, Aldrich has shared the cage with solid competition en route to an 11-6 promotional record. She’s primarily a striker who isn’t afraid to occasionally implement wrestling in her fights. The biggest knock against her is her lack of finishing potential; Aldrich has just a single stoppage win in nearly twenty fights with the UFC. However, she’s also historically been extremely hard to finish in her own right.
Regina Tarin: "Kill Bill" aims to build on a solid first showing under the UFC banner
Former WWE tryout, Regina Tarin (8-0), announced herself on the UFC scene with an impressive victory over Ernesta Kareckaite on extremely short notice in her debut, averaging more than 7 significant strikes landed a minute in a high output brawl. It was even more impressive to see the undefeated 21 year old flyweight win a hard fought decision considering that “Kill Bill” was signed with a reputation as a dangerous KO artist with wins over middling levels of competition, raising the inevitable questions as to how she would fare against a UFC fighter if she was unable to score the early finish.
JJ Aldrich vs Regina Tarin prediction
This is a good test for Tarin. Aldrich has never been the most spectacular combatant in the women’s divisions, but she’s a well-rounded and highly experienced veteran. Case in point, she has a win over Gillian Robertson, who just fought for the strawweight title.
However, I think that “Kill Bill” should pass this test with flying colors. In addition to being the more powerful, faster striker in this matchup, she throws and lands at a much higher clip than Aldrich. Furthermore, the American has a negligible reach advantage and Tarin is the naturally bigger woman.
The X-factor is whether Aldrich can mix in some wrestling to slow Tarin’s onslaught. She has occasionally leaned on takedowns in the past and the Mexican prospect was grounded by Ernesta Kareckaite in her only UFC bout to date. However, she hasn’t historically proven to be a smothering wrestling threat to the point that I think she’s about to put a grappling clinic on Tarin.
Aldrich has proven extremely difficult to finish in the past, so give me Tarin by decision. “Kill Bill” pieces up Aldrich across three rounds, landing the more damaging shots to earn the unanimous decision victory.
Prediction: Regina Tarin to win by decision
